SAFETEA-LU
On August 10, 2005, President George W. Bush
signed the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient
Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU).
SAFETEA-LU authorizes the Federal surface transportation
programs for highways, highway safety, and transit for the
5-year period 2005-2009.
Section 2010 of this
legislation provides funding to "encourage
States to adopt and implement effective programs to reduce the
number of single and multi-vehicle crashes involving
motorcyclists."
The
Delaware Office of Highway Safety
applied for and received the minimum amount, $100,000.
At the
September 19, 2006 meeting of the Motorcycle Rider Education
Advisory Committee, Lisa Moore of the Office of Highway Safety
reported that since Delaware had only just received the
monies, they were still evaluating the terms and conditions of
its use. We expect to have an update on the status of
these funds at the next Advisory Committee meeting on December
12, 2006. The results will be posted here as well as on
the
Delaware Freedom Riders Bulletin Board.
This
money comes from YOUR tax dollars. YOU have a right to
have input into how it is used.
What are other states doing?
The
Motorcycle Rider Education Advisory Committee, was
re-established by
House Resolution 16,
introduced by Representative Bruce C. Ennis, District 28 and
co-sponsored by Representatives William R. Outten (District
30), Helene M. Keeley (District 3), Clifford G Lee (District
40, House Majority Whip), Terry R. Spence (District 18,
Speaker of the House), and John F. Van Sant (District 13,
House Minority Whip). Are any of these co-sponsors your
Representative? Why did they sponsor or co-sponsor this
legislation? You can ask, and find out if your
Representative is committed to the safety of motorcyclists.
You
have a right to know.
